FIVE STEPS TO CREATING
A NATIONAL NETWORK
OF AV-TRANSLATORS

STEP ONE:

Start a mailing list on subtitling and dubbing and get as many to join as possible. Yahoo Groups offer a splendid and easy-to-use way of establishing e-mail mailing lists. Start inviting colleagues!

Check out http://groups.yahoo.com/

STEP TWO:

Use the mailing list to discuss the possibility of forming an association of subtitlers.

STEP THREE:

Call a meeting and form the association with simple statutes and a committee. Aim at including subtitlers from the greatest possible number of companies. Membership should be inexpensive in order to get as many as possible of your colleagues to join. Strength lies in numbers.

STEP FOUR:

Get the association up and running.
Use the Internet to collect and exchange information about working conditions, prices etc.
If possible, establish a home page.
Invite subtitlers to informal café meetings allowing them to get to know each other and talk shop.

STEP FIVE:

Try to take the association one step further and offer members lectures and seminars on relevant subjects. Ask a policeman, a doctor, a lawyer, a baseball expert etc. to give an informal lecture on the terminology of their field. Make membership fun as well as useful. You are now ready for the next step:

FORMING A UNION!
